The Civil Guard in the Region of Murcia has launched an investigation into a man from San Pedro del Pinatar after several protected finches were discovered inside a private home. Officers were carrying out routine duties in the area when they noticed what appeared to be goldfinches on the property. With the owner’s permission, Seprona agents entered the building to check the situation.

Inside, they learned that the birds belonged to a third individual who admitted having no hunting licence or administrative authorisation to possess, breed, or transport the species. These birds, considered protected under both European and regional legislation, require strict permits for their capture and keeping.

Following the discovery, Seprona placed the animals at the disposal of the Court of Instruction in San Javier. The unit has also prepared a case file for an alleged offence relating to the protection of wildlife, as set out in the Spanish Penal Code.

The investigation will determine whether criminal charges should follow, and the authorities remind the public that the possession of wild birds without the appropriate documentation can lead to prosecution and sanctions.
