The Guardia Civil in the Region of Murcia has arrested a woman who allegedly drove more than 20 kilometres the wrong way along the A-7, with her underage son travelling in the car. The incident took place in the municipality of Murcia, when emergency services received more than a dozen calls from drivers reporting a vehicle travelling against the flow of traffic.

Traffic officers were deployed immediately and activated the protocol for vehicles travelling in the wrong direction on dual carriageways. One patrol stopped traffic to protect other road users, while others crossed the central reservation on foot and managed to halt the car at kilometre 601 of the A-7, near Alhama de Murcia. No crashes were recorded.

Officers carried out breath tests on the driver, which showed positive readings of 1.09 and 1.04 mg/l of alcohol in exhaled air, more than four times the legal limit. Her young son was also found in the vehicle.

The woman has been accused of two offences against road safety: driving with an excessive alcohol level and dangerous driving. The potential penalties include prison sentences, fines, and a driving ban. The Guardia Civil has again urged motorists not to drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and to take extra care when transporting children.
