A violet stingray has been rescued and returned to the sea in Torrevieja after being discovered alive but stranded on rocks on Monday, 8 December. The species, which is rarely seen in the area, was spotted in time for a coordinated response that brought together several local and regional teams.

The call was made to 112, prompting the UMAT environmental unit of Torrevieja’s Policía Local to attend the scene. They worked alongside technicians from Oceanogràfic’s ARCA del Mar and staff from the council’s Environment Department to assess the stingray’s condition. After determining she had a good chance of survival, the teams agreed she should be released.

The rescue was not straightforward, as limited knowledge exists on treating this particular species. However, with help from sailors at the Real Club Náutico de Torrevieja, the UMAT officers successfully carried out the release.

The stingray swam away strongly once back in open water, providing welcome relief for everyone involved. The incident highlights the commitment of local teams who work quietly but effectively to protect coastal wildlife.
