Cartagena’s Parks and Gardens service has removed an old palm tree near the bust of King Carlos III on Muralla del Mar after discovering signs of red palm weevil infestation. The tree stood beside the monumental staircase connecting the quay with the street and had shown clear symptoms of damage caused by the invasive beetle.

The felling was carried out late last month by contracted staff, who confirmed the extent of the infestation during their inspection. Municipal sources say the decision was made to prevent the pest from spreading further in one of the city’s busiest historic areas.

The red palm weevil has been a persistent problem across the region, affecting palms in private gardens and public spaces alike. Once the beetle takes hold, it is notoriously difficult to eradicate, often forcing authorities to remove infected trees.

The council is continuing to survey nearby palms to determine whether additional felling or treatment will be required. Officials say their priority is to contain the pest and protect remaining palms in the area.
