Alicante’s Urban Mobility department has released figures showing 15,074 speeding fines issued by newly installed roadside cameras between 17 January and 17 October. The council says the devices have helped reduce overall speeds, improve road safety and cut pollution in key corridors leading in and out of the city.

According to councillor Carlos de Juan, the cameras have reduced average daily infringements to 55.2, down from 134.5 during the testing phase. The camera on Avenida de Dénia, near Vistahermosa, recorded the highest number of offences with 9,448 fines. Others on Avenida de Elche logged 4,319 fines, while cameras on Caja de Ahorros and Avenida de Villajoyosa recorded 656 and 651 respectively.

The system uses interchangeable cameras that can be moved between twelve fixed posts placed at strategic points, including Avenida de Dénia, Avenida de Elche, Caja de Ahorros, Avenida de Villajoyosa, Avenida de la Universidad and Avenida La Goleta. Five of the posts were installed under a contract awarded in September 2024 to Smartpol Gestión S.L., worth 290,673.77 euros, which also covered the supply of four doppler multicarril speed meters.

The council insists the network is not designed to raise revenue, but to discourage speeding and encourage safer driving. Officials say the falling number of infringements shows growing public awareness and forms part of a wider strategy to improve mobility and support a safer and more sustainable city.
