Doctors in our regions and across Spain are set to begin a four‑day strike from 9 to 12 December in protest against planned reforms to the national staffing framework, known as the Estatuto Marco. Medical unions say the changes could worsen working conditions and hinder recruitment, particularly in primary care.

Minimum service levels will ensure that emergency departments continue operating, but routine activity in health centres and hospitals is expected to run at reduced capacity. Previous stoppages in June and October caused delays, and health managers warn the impact could be greater this time as the walkout spans most of the week.

The strike coincides with an unexpected spike in seasonal flu. Regional health data show infections rose by 110% last week, with a notable increase in hospital admissions. At the Reina Sofía Hospital, flu inpatients climbed from 7 on Monday to 17 by Friday.

Health authorities say the combination of industrial action and rising flu cases may place additional pressure on services as the year‑end period traditionally sees efforts to cut waiting lists. They are urging the public to use emergency departments only when strictly necessary.
