San Javier has commenced roadworks on the main artery connecting to Santiago de la Ribera. The construction will occur on Avenida de la Aviación Española, where a three hundred and fifty metre stretch of new water pipes will be laid. These works are expected to continue until August, resulting in traffic being diverted to the side lanes for safety and efficiency.

Councillor for Public Services, María Dolores Ruiz, explained that the works are crucial in preventing potential flooding during heavy rains in September. The new drainage system will collect rainwater running from the urban centre towards the sea. The installation will feature pipes with a diameter of one metre and will include forty strategically placed grates to manage rainfall runoff.

This project aims to differentiate greywater from stormwater in the urban area effectively. Ruiz emphasized the importance of this phase of the project, as the previous drainage installation at the Policía roundabout frequently overflowed during torrential rains.

The roadworks will receive funding of five hundred and ninety-one thousand three hundred euros, as part of a larger package of three million euros allocated to San Javier by the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge. This investment aims to improve urban infrastructure and mitigate underground water infiltration, helping to address environmental concerns affecting the Mar Menor.
