Two off-duty National Police officers have saved the life of a three-year-old boy who was suffering severe breathing difficulties in the centre of Alicante. The child was being held by his mother when the officers, who were nearby a police station, noticed her asking for help in the street.

After seeing that the child was barely breathing and unresponsive, the officers placed him on the bonnet of a police vehicle and carried out an examination. They found his tongue was swollen and blocking his airway, and immediately performed emergency manoeuvres to help him breathe.

The boy began to respond and gradually regained his breathing and awareness. The officers placed him in the recovery position and continued to monitor him until paramedics arrived. He was then taken with his mother to San Juan Hospital in Alicante, where he remained under observation for several hours before being discharged.

National Police have highlighted that officers receive ongoing training in first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation and the use of defibrillators, enabling them to respond effectively to emergencies both on and off duty.
