Parents and teachers at two public primary schools in La Unión have raised concerns after pupils were left studying in very low temperatures due to broken heating systems. The affected schools are Alfonso X, with 178 pupils, and Ginés Cabezos in Roche, which has 156 children in Infant and Primary education.

Staff say they have been reporting the problem to the town hall for several months without a solution. Since classes resumed after the Christmas holidays, some classrooms have recorded temperatures of just nine degrees, well below recommended levels for teaching environments.

As a result, many pupils have been wearing coats and extra layers during lessons while the region experiences a cold snap. Teachers say the conditions make it difficult for children to concentrate and raise concerns about their health and wellbeing.

The schools are again calling on the local council to carry out urgent repairs to the heating systems to ensure safe and suitable conditions for learning.
