People living along the southern coast of Alicante were surprised by a striking natural phenomenon in the early hours of Thursday morning, when a bright fireball streaked across the sky near Torrevieja. The event was recorded at 06:47 by a webcam operated by Proyecto Mastral, which captured the bolide as it passed over La Mata beach, with its glow clearly reflected on the surface of the sea.

According to Proyecto Mastral, bolides are exceptionally bright shooting stars. They are created when fragments of comets or asteroids enter the Earth’s atmosphere at very high speed, producing an intense flash that can last several seconds. Unlike more common meteors, bolides can often be seen even in coastal or urban areas with some light pollution.

While the appearance of bolides is not unusual, it is rare for them to be recorded so clearly by fixed cameras. Experts say favourable conditions, including clear skies and the position of the webcam, helped to capture this event in detail. They have also stressed that such fragments burn up completely in the atmosphere and do not pose any danger to the public.
