The Socialist Party in Torrevieja has submitted a motion to the Town Hall calling for the urgent rehabilitation of municipal properties, better protection of historic buildings, and a gradual reduction in spending on rented offices. The PSOE says the current model costs public finances more than 240,000 euros a year.

According to party spokesperson Bárbara Soler, the council has acknowledged several rental contracts worth around 19,000 euros a month, with additional leases pushing the real figure beyond 20,000 euros. She argues this spending continues to rise while many council-owned buildings remain closed, underused, or abandoned.

Among the properties highlighted are a three-storey municipal building on Calle Clemente Gosálvez, where only the ground floor is used, and the historic building on Calle Azorín, unused since being acquired in 2011. Soler also pointed to the former Town Hall, closed to the public since 2014, describing its condition as worrying and in need of immediate intervention.

The motion calls for an updated inventory of municipal properties, urgent works on the old Town Hall, the reuse of empty buildings, and a clear plan to cut rental costs. The ruling People’s Party has announced it will submit a full amendment, stating that vacant buildings are earmarked for future municipal use.
