A 69-year-old man has died months after being struck by an electric scooter in the Alicante town of Torrevieja, in a case that could now be reclassified as involuntary manslaughter. The collision happened in July last year, and the man, who lived in Toledo, died on 31 December after his health never recovered from the injuries he suffered.

His family say he was left with ninety-five per cent disability and extreme fragility following the crash. He spent several weeks in intensive care at Elche General Hospital with serious brain injuries and, although he survived the initial phase, relatives say even a mild infection later proved fatal because of the lasting impact of the accident.

The scooter rider, a 25-year-old man, was arrested by Torrevieja’s Policía Local around ten days after the incident, after allegedly fleeing the scene without helping the victim. He was initially investigated for causing serious injury through negligence, but the offence may now be upgraded to involuntary manslaughter, which can carry a prison sentence of one to four years under Spanish law.

The case has renewed concern among local residents about the use of electric scooters in Torrevieja, with calls for tighter regulation and better monitoring, particularly in busy tourist areas.
