Orihuela Costa is set to see significant improvements as the local council has awarded a contract for the repair of the barandillas at Playa Flamenca and the promenade from Cala Capitán to Cala Bosque. The contract, given to Construcciones Zaplana Caselles, aims to replace six hundred iron posts across one thousand five hundred metres and renew old horizontal stainless steel tubes. This follows a drawn-out period of neglect that has raised safety concerns, particularly where barandillas have disappeared.

The project will begin once the act of replanteo is signed, likely by the end of this month, with work scheduled during August and September. The council stipulated a daily penalty for any delays, reinforcing the urgency of the repairs that have been long requested by local residents. The association Unidos por la Costa has been vocal about the need for these improvements, highlighting both aesthetic and safety issues.

In addition to the barandillas, the local council has also approved a new public lighting system along the promenades. The current lighting will be replaced with energy-efficient LED technology, which aims to lower power consumption and reduce emissions, contributing to environmental sustainability. The contract for the lighting replacement has been awarded to Instalaciones Electricidad Paquete.

The Councillor for Costa, Manuel Mestre, stated that these works represent a long-awaited response to community demands and will restore the promenades to a state that befits the area. Such infrastructure improvements seek to enhance the experience for both visitors and locals who frequent these popular coastal areas.
