The Guardia Civil has taken action against fraudulent honey production in Cieza, leading to the closure of two establishments. Three tonnes of low-quality honey and associated products have been seized by the environmental protection service, known as Seprona, after it was deemed unfit for human consumption. The investigation initiated in March revealed that two apiarists were purchasing industrial honey and misrepresenting it as locally produced premium honey.

The seized products included over three thousand kilograms of honey, and various bee-related goods, totalling a market value near twenty thousand euros. Accusations against the suspects include public health violations, fraud concerning marketing and subsidies, and document forgery. The operation aimed to prevent non-compliant honey products from reaching consumers.

Seprona worked in collaboration with the Murcia regional government’s food inspection services. Their thorough inspections uncovered significant deficiencies related to product traceability and required documentation at two bee farms. This operation reflects a commitment to ensure consumer safety and uphold public health standards.
