The Ayuntamiento of Orihuela will begin implementing a new waste collection system in Orihuela Costa on Monday. This initiative is based on a comprehensive technical study aimed at adapting waste management to current and future needs. The study considers factors such as seasonal population growth and urban morphology while ensuring compliance with environmental regulations at local, national, and European levels.

The primary objective is to improve the effectiveness of waste collection by ensuring a uniform distribution of containers in all residential areas. The plan includes optimising collection routes, thereby increasing service efficiency and reducing operational costs. Additionally, it aims to adjust the capacity of waste containers to actual waste generation, especially during peak season when the population expands significantly.

Moreover, the new system will facilitate the separation of organic waste through improved selective collection. This will be supported by the establishment of waste collection islands to aid citizens in proper waste sorting. The approach also includes modernising the collection method with lateral loading containers while preserving rear-loading systems where necessary.

Rocío Ortuño, the Councillor for Municipal Cleaning and Solid Urban Waste, emphasised the significance of this advance for the coastal area. She stated, “This new containerisation system results from serious technical work and will enhance waste collection quality, adapting services to the realities of Orihuela Costa while addressing present and future environmental challenges.” In recent months, the council has acquired over one thousand six hundred new containers for this project.
