The Valencian regional health department has begun the process to expand Torrevieja Hospital, a major project aimed at increasing capacity and responding to growing healthcare demand in the area. Officials say the expansion is needed because of population growth and the gradual ageing of residents within the local health district.

The regional health minister, Marciano Gómez, has met with Torrevieja’s mayor to agree the transfer of a council-owned plot of around 12,000 square metres next to the hospital and facing the coast. The land will allow the hospital to grow in stages and adapt to future needs. The health department is already working on a detailed functional plan, expected to be presented before the summer, setting out services, bed numbers, operating theatres and investment.

Alongside this, an urgent modular extension is moving ahead. In January, a €3.7 million contract was launched to create new outpatient clinics, larger rehabilitation facilities and an expanded dialysis unit. The new outpatient area is due to open in September, with the additional dialysis stations expected to be operational by the end of the year or early next year.

Officials say the modular system will also free up space in the existing building, allowing up to ten new hospital beds. The longer-term plan includes new hospital buildings and reserved land for future expansions as demand continues to grow.
