The Valencian regional government has confirmed the launch of a new public transport route connecting several Vega Baja towns with Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport. From 1 February, the service will link Almoradí, Formentera del Segura, Rojales, Guardamar del Segura and La Marina, in the Elche district.

The route will be operated by Bus Sigüenza under an emergency contract with a minimum duration of around twelve months. These contracts are used as interim solutions while long-term concessions remain too complex to tender. During the winter timetable, there will be three daily services from the airport and two departures a day from Almoradí, with more services planned during the summer months of July and August.

The new line is aimed particularly at residents in tourist-heavy areas with large foreign populations, although the municipalities together account for almost seventy thousand people. Until now, many travellers have relied on taxis costing around fifty-five euros per trip, or on the Torrevieja airport express, which does not serve these towns.

Ticket prices for the new bus service have yet to be confirmed, but they are expected to be significantly cheaper than taxis. Guardamar’s mayor has also announced work on a separate emergency bus line to the Hospital Universitario de Torrevieja, after a previous municipal service was withdrawn.
