Teachers, families and education unions have begun daily protests outside a primary school in Orihuela Costa over the continued lack of heating at the centre. The problem has remained unresolved for one hundred and eighteen days, forcing pupils to stay in classrooms wearing coats because of low indoor temperatures.

The parents’ association has stressed that the protest is not intended to create confrontation, but to publicly expose a situation affecting children’s health and wellbeing. As an emergency measure, families have purchased portable heaters, saying they cannot stand by while their children are cold at school.

The issue dates back to two thousand and twenty-four, when the school’s boiler broke down and was not repaired. After the Christmas holidays, concerns were raised with the local education councillor, who said the problem would be resolved, but the school was later excluded from an emergency fuel supply contract covering other centres.

Unions and community groups have criticised the council’s lack of action and commitment to public education. They are calling for an immediate and permanent solution, along with clear and transparent communication to guarantee safe and dignified learning conditions.
