Torrevieja Council has launched its activities to mark Tree Day 2026, with a major planting and ecological regeneration programme taking place in the Natural Park of the La Mata–Torrevieja Lagoons. The initiative has been presented by councillors for Education, Environment, and Parks and Gardens, alongside representatives from the Natural Park and water company AGAMED.

The programme involves nearly 1,000 pupils from 14 schools across Torrevieja, who began planting activities on Monday and will continue until Friday. Around 800 to 900 native plants are being planted in a designated area of the park, including species such as mastic tree, tamarisk, lavender, juniper, rosemary, Aleppo pine, and carob tree.

According to the park’s director-conservator, the event is one of the most significant and participatory Tree Day initiatives in Spain. It also benefits from support by workers and environmental brigades from other nearby natural parks.

AGAMED has prepared and adapted the planting area, providing irrigation support and plant protectors. In addition, pupils in Year Four received educational talks last week on correct planting techniques and the importance of restoring and expanding forest areas within a protected natural environment.
