A four-storey residential building in the centre of Rojales has been evacuated after part of its structure collapsed during renovation work. The incident happened at around twelve thirty on Monday, while contractors were carrying out the early stages of a rehabilitation project commissioned by the residents’ association.

Workers saw a beam on the building’s façade collapse and take on excessive load, prompting an immediate evacuation. Local Police officers, whose main station is next to the affected building, cleared the ten flats and ground-floor commercial premises without delay.

The property, which dates back around forty-five years, has since been fully shored up. The rehabilitation company, site managers and municipal engineers and architects assessed the damage throughout the afternoon, according to Rojales mayor Antonio Pérez.

Residents spent several hours waiting nearby before being rehoused with relatives or friends. The town council arranged accommodation in two local hotels for those without alternative options. It is not yet clear how long the building will remain closed, but officials say work is ongoing to make it safe as soon as possible.
