Spanish authorities have intercepted a boat carrying fifty-six migrants off the coast of Cabo Cope, near the town of Águilas. The Guardia Civil’s Maritime Service located the vessel at around 1 p.m. on Wednesday after it had crossed from the Algerian coast.
Officials said the group on board included forty-seven men, one woman and eight minors. All passengers were assisted by the Red Cross on arrival and were found to be in good health.
After receiving initial care, they were handed over to the National Police and transferred to the Centre for the Temporary Assistance of Foreigners, known as CATE, in Cartagena. An investigation has been launched to try to identify the people who piloted the boat, as part of wider efforts to tackle human trafficking networks involved in irregular migration.
