Health centres in Torrevieja and Pilar de la Horadada have been redesigned to create warmer and more welcoming environments for families and young patients. The project, led by the University of Alicante’s Torrevieja campus, introduces illustrated artwork into paediatric, nursing and breastfeeding areas to improve the patient experience.

The initiative forms part of the IHAN accreditation process, an international quality programme promoted by the World Health Organization and UNICEF to encourage humanised childbirth and support exclusive breastfeeding from birth. The Torrevieja Department of Health has worked towards these standards for more than 15 years, and the Pilar de la Horadada Health Centre has now officially received the IHAN distinction.

The accreditation ceremony took place on Tuesday at the local police headquarters in Pilar de la Horadada. Designer Alba Granero explained the emotional and educational approach behind her illustrations, developed alongside University of Alicante staff and healthcare professionals, with medical content overseen by specialists from Torrevieja University Hospital.

Four key spaces were redesigned, including waiting areas, a breastfeeding room and paediatric and nursing consultations. The pilot project was carried out at La Loma and El Acequión health centres in Torrevieja, and at Pilar de la Horadada, with funding support from the University of Alicante and Torrevieja’s Habaneras shopping centre.
