A peacock that lived in the Reina Sofía municipal park in Guardamar del Segura has tested positive for avian influenza. The town mayor, José Luis Sáez of the PSPV-PSOE, has said on social media that laboratory analyses determined the virus was the cause of the bird’s death; the announcement was posted on twenty-six November.

The town hall has activated an eradication protocol in coordination with the competent authorities. The council has placed notices forbidding people from feeding or giving water to birds in the Reina Sofía park and on the nearby Avenida del Ingeniero Mira. Officials say the risk of transmission to humans is very low, although a minimal possibility exists with direct contact.

Guardamar del Segura has begun draining and cleaning lakes in its municipal areas, and teams are establishing containment zones and removing affected species. Residents are being urged to avoid contact with wild birds, not to feed them, and to follow guidance from the council while authorities continue monitoring the situation.
