The Orihuela Council has announced its intent to enhance the safety of the municipality by expanding its CCTV surveillance system. An initial investment of two hundred eighty thousand euros has been allocated for the first phase, which aims to cover thirty strategic locations. These areas include several coastal zones and rural neighbourhoods identified as having a higher incidence of criminal activity and lacking adequate surveillance.

The proposed locations will include prominent sites in Punta Prima, La Zenia, and Aguamarina, as well as rural areas like La Aparecida and Arneva. Additionally, the local police station will benefit from upgraded systems through the installation of fourteen new devices. This expansion is a crucial step in addressing safety concerns across the region.

Among the enhancements, the introduction of licence plate recognition cameras will significantly aid local officers in monitoring vehicle activity relating to potential offences. Mónica Pastor, the Councillor for Citizen Security, remarked that these tools are vital for improving public safety and enhancing police response times.

While this initial contract does not include additional cameras in urban areas, Pastor reassures that future phases will address these locations. As part of a broader strategy, the overall investment for the entire project is expected to surpass one million euros, marking a commitment to ongoing improvements in community safety and technology.
