A man has been arrested in Torrevieja after allegedly beating a cat to death in the street on Monday. The animal belonged to his former partner. Neighbours in Calle Jacarilla alerted Local Police after witnessing the attack, in which the man reportedly threw the cat against a wall and continued kicking it.

Four police patrols attended the scene and confirmed the animal had died. Officers restrained and handcuffed the suspect, who was described as highly agitated and allegedly under the influence of alcohol and drugs. He was taken first to a health centre and then to the Guardia Civil station.

An investigation has been opened for alleged animal cruelty, with further proceedings relating to gender-based violence after the woman filed a formal complaint. Police have submitted video footage recorded by neighbours to the Guardia Civil. Veterinary services from the municipal animal shelter are preparing a report on the injuries and cause of death.

Torrevieja Council has strongly condemned the incident and reaffirmed its commitment to animal protection. On the same day, the council unanimously approved joining the national VIOPET programme, which supports victims of gender-based violence by arranging safe accommodation for their pets.
