A 25-year-old man from Mazarrón has died after diving into the sea in a prohibited bathing area of the town’s fishing harbour.
The incident took place on Monday afternoon. Witnesses said the man removed his sandals and jumped headfirst into the water in an area where locals report there is thick mud on the seabed. He did not manage to resurface, prompting bystanders to raise the alarm.
Civil Protection technicians, Local Police officers and Guardia Civil officers attended the scene. The young man was recovered from the water, but he was already dead.
The Guardia Civil, which is leading the investigation, is treating the death as accidental. Sources close to the case said the victim, a Pakistani national named Abdul, is believed to have struck his head on the muddy seabed and was unable to get out of the water. His body has been transferred to the Institute of Legal Medicine for a post-mortem examination.
