Torrevieja Council is due to approve the start of proceedings to build a monument in memory of the victims of the bombing of 25 August 1938, during the Spanish Civil War. The attack was carried out by Italian fascist aircraft and remains one of the most tragic episodes in the town’s history.

The proposal has received unanimous support from all municipal political groups. The council says the monument will serve as a space for remembrance and respect, while also promoting democratic values and reflection on the consequences of war.

Mayor Eduardo Dolón has welcomed the cross-party consensus, describing it as a shared sign of respect for the town’s history. He also thanked José Manuel Martínez Andreu for his key role in coordinating the institutional tribute.

The sculpture has been commissioned from local artist Rafael Torres, based on designs already presented to council spokespersons. The project continues a commitment first made in 2019 to create a permanent space for collective memory in Torrevieja.
