The Guardia Civil have arrested two North African men following a fatal shooting in central Torrevieja on Saturday. The victim, an Algerian national, died after an exchange of gunfire in a busy area near the junction of Calle Bergantín and Los Gases, close to a supermarket.

Investigators say those involved had previous disputes and had reportedly been involved in earlier altercations in the area. One man was seriously injured in the shooting and died shortly afterwards. His body remained at the scene until a judicial authority authorised its removal.

A large police operation was launched, involving the Guardia Civil and Torrevieja Local Police. Officers sealed off the area, gathered ballistic evidence and began initial enquiries. The two suspects were arrested within hours. Both were reportedly in Spain irregularly and subject to active deportation orders. The investigation is continuing and further arrests have not been ruled out.

The incident follows several recent firearms cases in Torrevieja, some of them fatal, which have heightened concerns about public safety. The town does not currently have a National Police station, and responsibility for security lies with the Guardia Civil and Local Police. In 2025, the municipal council formally backed a request for a dedicated National Police station, citing population growth and increasing pressure on local security services.
