Torrevieja is preparing to open a new 2,000m² gastronomic market in the La Plasa building after the city council awarded a ten-year concession to Origen Murcia. The company will manage the space, which will occupy the ground floor and mezzanine and combine a traditional fresh produce market with a gourmet food hall.

Mayor Eduardo Dolón has said the aim is to transform the site into an all-day destination rather than a market that closes at midday. The project is designed to create a lively meeting point that boosts economic activity and helps revitalise the town centre.

Alongside fresh and local produce, the market will include places to eat and drink on site. Local entrepreneurs and self-employed traders are expected to take part, following a model already successful in cities such as Madrid, Seville and Murcia. Existing vendors have been offered special terms to remain.

The development represents close to €1 million in private investment and is expected to generate around 230 jobs, both directly and indirectly. Construction is reported to be on schedule, with the market due to open before the end of 2026 or in early 2027.
