Sierra Escalona has reached a key milestone in its bid for full Natural Park status following approval of its Natural Resources Management Plan. The protected mountain range lies between San Miguel de Salinas, Orihuela and Pilar de la Horadada, just inland from coastal areas including Campoamor, Cabo Roig and La Zenia.

The plan sets out how the area and its surrounding land will be managed in future. It identifies zones requiring the highest level of protection and establishes rules for farming, leisure activities and any nearby development. Approval of the document is a legal requirement before Natural Park status can be formally granted.

Sierra Escalona is widely recognised for its rich biodiversity, particularly its population of birds of prey, as well as its mix of pine forest, scrubland and open countryside. Conservation groups have long argued that the area deserves stronger, long-term safeguards.

Natural Park designation could also benefit nearby communities. Similar protected areas often attract sustainable tourism and investment, supporting local economies while preserving the landscape that residents and visitors value so highly.
