Anti-jellyfish nets will be installed at five beaches around the Mar Menor from June to September. The Regional Ministry of the Environment has put out a tender worth €90,000 to cover 4.4 km of coastline at La Mota, Villananitos and La Puntica in San Pedro del Pinatar, and Veneziola and Pantalán in La Manga, San Javier.

The nets are designed to create a barrier that keeps jellyfish away from bathing areas while still allowing water to circulate naturally. Officials say this also helps prevent the build-up of organic matter in swimming zones. The system has been reintroduced in recent summers following high numbers of Cotyloryza tuberculata, commonly known as the fried egg jellyfish.

Jellyfish remain an important part of the Mar Menor ecosystem, feeding on plankton and helping to maintain ecological balance. The Ministry has said the nets will only be installed where they are most needed and will be handled carefully to avoid harm to seahorses and other protected species.

Authorisation is in place to install nets along up to 43 km of Mar Menor beaches if required, with permission running until 2028.
