The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility has begun work on installing an artificial intelligence-based traffic light system at the Punta Prima roundabout on the N-332, at kilometre 52.8 in Alicante province. The project started on Monday 30 March and will involve partial traffic closures until the end of May to ensure safety.

The system will use machine learning and reinforcement learning techniques to monitor and manage traffic flows. Cameras and data collection devices will be installed at each access to the roundabout, alongside new traffic light posts. An AI-based control system will then adjust signal cycles automatically according to real-time traffic conditions.

The technology combines neural networks, large-scale data analysis and traditional traffic engineering methods to identify the most efficient solution for road users. The aim is to improve traffic flow and management at the busy junction while laying the groundwork for wider use of intelligent systems across the State road network.

The project has a budget of 409,370 euros, including VAT, and is funded through the European Union’s Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan.
