Torrevieja has reopened the remodelled Levante breakwater walkway, allowing pedestrians once again to reach the lighthouse. The 1,247-metre stretch reopened on Saturday after works costing 6,543,733 euros including VAT. Although the project was delivered more than eight months late, it is now open in time for Easter.

The refurbishment has replaced the original 1999 wooden boards with continuous technological decking, improved the pedestrian route and renewed safety and protection elements. A high-efficiency RGB lighting system, funded through Next Generation EU recovery funds, has also been installed along 1,300 metres of the breakwater, illuminating it at night in changing colours.

The delay was mainly caused by bacterial contamination in the stainless steel used for railings and handrails, which had to be fully removed and replaced. Weather conditions and supply issues also contributed. The works were carried out by CHM Obras e Infraestructuras and began in November 2024.

However, access remains complicated. The main entrance from Hombre del Mar is still under construction as part of a separate project valued at more than three million euros. That ramp connection is expected to take around four more months to complete.
