Torrevieja joined cities around the world on Saturday evening to mark Earth Hour by switching off lights in five of its most emblematic squares.
From 20:30 to 21:30, public lighting was turned off in Plaza de la Constitución, Plaza Miguel Hernández, Plaza del Centro Cultural Virgen del Carmen, Plaza de Oriente and Plaza de Encarnación Puchol in La Mata. The initiative formed part of the annual Earth Hour campaign.
The councillor for Public Lighting, Concha Sala, said the city was showing its full support for the global movement led by the World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF). The campaign aims to raise awareness of climate change and promote respect for the environment.
Earth Hour began in Sydney in 2007 and has since grown into a worldwide event, with millions of people and thousands of cities and businesses taking part each year.
