The high season for motorhome tourism has returned strongly across Alicante province, including the Vega Baja, with Torrevieja and Orihuela Costa experiencing a sharp rise in vehicles parked in prominent coastal locations.

In Torrevieja, motorhomes have occupied seafront avenues, green areas at La Mata beach, La Veleta in the south of the town, and land near the Natural Park of the Lagoons of Torrevieja and La Mata. Some of the most sensitive areas are buffer zones protected under environmental planning rules, where camping is not permitted. Residents have raised concerns about waste and wastewater being left behind.

Torrevieja Council has installed signs banning the parking of motorhomes wider than 2.2 metres. However, Local Police can only enforce restrictions on public roads, not on privately owned land within the natural park area. Officers say the issue is one of many demands on their resources.

In Orihuela Costa, dozens of motorhomes have taken over the large municipal car park next to Zenia Boulevard, a site of more than 20,000 square metres. With no overnight charge or strict time limit enforced, short 24-hour stops have in some cases become stays lasting weeks. While some local businesses report increased sales, the saturation has reduced parking turnover and sparked debate over regulation.
