Cartagena City Council has formally requested permission from Spain’s coastal authority to install five floating docks on the Mar Menor during the busier months of the year until 2030.

The proposal covers the period from 1 March to 31 December 2026, and the same seasonal window each year from 2027 to the end of 2030. The floating pontoons would be located at Los Nietos-Marina, Cavanna Beach and Los Alemanes Beach, all on the Cartagena side of the lagoon.

According to the technical documents, the installations would be secured using helical anchor bolts to minimise damage to the seabed. The docks would be installed and removed vertically to avoid dragging across sensitive habitats, with inspections carried out after storms and through routine maintenance checks.

The council says the project is compatible with the area’s marine protection strategy and conservation goals. The full proposal is now open to public consultation for 20 working days, after which the coastal authority will decide whether to grant approval.
