Residents in Orihuela Costa have renewed complaints about an illegal dumping site on municipal land in Cabo Touriñán Street, close to several housing developments and the AP-7 motorway. The plot has reportedly been used for years as a container storage and waste collection point, creating what neighbours describe as an alarming and unhealthy environment.

The residents’ group Unidos por la Costa has warned that recent strong winds have left some containers at risk of falling onto the AP-7, as protective motorway fencing has been broken for a considerable time. They say the situation poses a real threat to road safety and public health, with rubbish accumulating near homes and a noticeable increase in flies and mosquitoes.

The group has called for immediate intervention from the council’s departments of Health, Environment and Urban Solid Waste, stressing that maintenance of public spaces and proper waste management are legal obligations. They have also warned that failure to act could lead to administrative, civil or even criminal liability if an accident occurs.

Residents first raised concerns in early 2023, when fencing around the municipal plot was removed and private individuals allegedly began depositing furniture and other waste. They claim the site has since been left unprotected, with reports at the time of overflowing containers and even rats in the surrounding area.
