Yesterday afternoon, a serious accident took place on the CV-905 in Torrevieja, resulting in the tragic death of a driver. The incident occurred when a palm tree, weakened by the red weevil, suddenly collapsed onto a moving vehicle, striking the driver’s side directly. Emergency services were alerted at five oh seven and were on the scene until six thirteen.

The driver was trapped inside the vehicle and unfortunately died on impact. Fortunately, no other individuals were reported injured in the accident. Reports indicate that the palm tree was compromised due to the red weevil, a pest that diminishes the internal structure of the tree.

It is believed that wind could have contributed to the tree’s collapse, leading to the disastrous event on the busy road. Emergency responders from the Provincial Consortium of Firefighters in Alicante deployed resources including one command unit, one heavy urban pump, and one rescue van, alongside a team consisting of one sergeant, one corporal, and six firefighters stationed in Torrevieja.

This unfortunate incident highlights the potential dangers posed by weakened trees and the impact of pests such as the red weevil on public safety. The local authorities will likely review tree maintenance protocols to prevent similar incidents in the future.
