The Town Hall of Bigastro has secured a grant of one hundred eighty-five thousand two hundred and seventy-nine euros from the Ministry of the Agenda 2030 for the construction of a new floodable park. This park will be situated in the area of La Pedrera, which has been significantly impacted by rainwater accumulation. Bigastro was selected as one of twenty-three municipalities from over six hundred applications submitted nationwide.

The floodable park is part of the Plan to Combat Flooding and will be able to store up to thirty thousand cubic metres of water. Its main objective will be to reduce the speed at which water flows from the La Pedrera basin, thereby minimising the effects of torrential rain and extreme weather events on the lower areas of the municipality.

In addition to its flood management capabilities, the park will feature a multifunctional design. When not in use for water retention, it will serve as a recreational and sports area for residents, enhancing the connection between the urban environment and the natural landscape of Bigastro. The project also includes the installation of solar lighting to promote responsible energy use and facilitate nighttime accessibility.

Furthermore, the project incorporates a water management system, allowing part of the retained water to be pumped to a nearby irrigation pond. This initiative encourages circular economy practices and aims to reduce resource consumption. The Town Hall has announced that the project drafting has already commenced, with construction anticipated to start in the first quarter of twenty twenty-six and to conclude before November of that year.
