A search operation is in progress for two French hikers reported missing in the region of Cartagena. The emergency services were alerted at around eight forty-six this evening by friends who indicated that the hikers, aged between forty and fifty, had not returned from their excursion. They set out from El Campillo towards Cala Cerrada around eleven o’clock this morning and were expected back after lunch.

The local police located the hikers’ vehicle at the starting point, along with the friends who raised the alarm. Although they were able to provide contact numbers, attempts to connect with the hikers initially failed. A comprehensive search involving the Civil Guard, local firefighters, Civil Protection, and local police is now underway, utilising ground and aerial teams, including three drones.

Later in the evening, at ten thirty-one, a coastal search vessel was deployed to assist in the operation. Shortly thereafter, at ten forty-nine, friends reported receiving a message from the hikers, stating that they were safe yet disoriented, without water, and fatigued. Firefighters in Cartagena managed to establish communication, and the hikers are believed to be located between La Torre de Santa Elena and Cala Cerrada.

Emergency services continue to coordinate search efforts through the Cartagena Emergency Services and the Regional Emergency Coordination Centre. The local community remains hopeful for their swift and safe recovery.
