Torrevieja has once again demonstrated its commitment to breast cancer awareness by organising various events on the nineteenth of October, in line with International Breast Cancer Awareness Day. The occasion was facilitated by the Afecáncer Association and the Alicante Association against Cancer. Mayor Eduardo Dolón, along with health councillor Rosa Cañón and other local officials, visited stands set up at the Constitution Square, where they joined Vicky Meneses, president of Afecáncer.

During the day, Meneses read a manifesto highlighting the critical importance of early detection, research, and emotional support for those diagnosed with the disease. The event culminated in the heartfelt release of biodegradable pink balloons, representing universal hope and solidarity for all women and families facing breast cancer.

Following the main activities, the group proceeded to Concepción Street, where additional information stands were managed by the Alicante Association against Cancer, led by Manoli Flores. Volunteers provided valuable information on prevention, medical check-ups, and healthy habits, while also raising funds for research and psychological support programmes.

International Breast Cancer Awareness Day, established by the World Health Organization, aims to sensitise the public about the importance of early diagnosis, which can save thousands of lives each year. According to the Spanish Society of Medical Oncology, one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, although survival rates have significantly improved due to scientific advancements and early detection. For another year, Torrevieja joined the global pink wave on the nineteenth of October, a day not only to raise awareness of the illness but also to honour survivors, remember those who have not survived, and strengthen societal commitment to research, prevention, and empathy.
