Torrevieja Town Council has taken a firm stance by imposing an initial fine of twenty-six thousand eight hundred and thirteen euros on the owners of the former sports facility in La Veleta. This decision follows the owners’ disregard for the council’s directive to clean and secure the site, which currently presents a dismal appearance at the junction of Mare Nostrum, Pacífico, and Mar Cantábrico streets.

The unresolved situation has led to numerous visits from the local police, complaints from nearby residents, and appeals from the owners’ legal representatives. These appeals have been consistently rejected by the council’s technical team since the process began back in twenty twenty-two. The legal battles included one that temporarily stalled the imposition of this fine based on claims that there was insufficient evidence to confirm compliance with a prior court ruling.

The property owners assert they are keen to resolve issues related to the plot, which is situated in a prestigious residential area of Torrevieja. Despite their attempts to present budgets for fencing and cleaning, the site is littered with vegetation waste and rubbish. They argue that, during their inaction, squatters have entered the property, leading to ongoing problems that have prompted further complaints from local communities.

Originally covering approximately nine thousand five hundred square metres, the facility once served as the social hub of the neighbourhood, complete with a café, tennis courts, gardens, and a swimming pool. However, after its closure, it has faced gradual deterioration. Various development proposals, including plans for a campsite and a five-star resort, have been stalled by the council, keeping the area in a state of neglect and controversy.
