The Ayuntamiento of Benipila has initiated a large-scale cleaning project targeting over fifty kilometres of urban waterways filled with vegetation and rubbish. Currently, a digger is removing excess dirt at Los Patojos, with additional machinery expected to join the effort in the coming weeks. The cleanup is deemed crucial for public health due to the uncontrolled growth of brush and the accumulation of waste, which fosters the proliferation of insects and rodents near residential areas.

The project will focus on over twenty different areas, including significant sections of Benipila and Canteras. The most extensive areas to be cleaned include a nearly three and a half kilometre stretch from Cándido’s houses to Navantia, as well as stretches near the San Vicente de Paúl school, moving through locations such as Los Barreros and the urbanisation of Mediterranean.

In addition to addressing unsanitary conditions, the clean-up aims to improve water flow during rainy periods and avoid flooding. Plans are in place to clear various urban stretches, including areas around the old Naval Hospital and multiple waterways across El Algar, Perín, and beyond. A second digger is expected to begin work near Los Patojos soon to assist with the clearing process.

This clean-up initiative began earlier this month in coordination with the Confederación Hidrográfica del Segura. Urban Planning and Infrastructure Councillor Diego Ortega emphasises the necessity of maintaining these watercourses to ensure a safer and cleaner environment for residents. The campaign highlights the Ayuntamiento’s commitment to improving urban hygiene and infrastructure.
