On Thursday, the seventh of August, twenty twenty-five, bathers at La Reya beach in Mazarrón were startled by the sudden appearance of a two-metre shark. The shark came close to the shore around three o’clock in the afternoon, causing panic among swimmers who quickly exited the water. As news of the shark spread, more people gathered to witness the unusual sight and take photographs.

Emergency services responded swiftly to the incident and dispatched a boat to lead the shark back to deeper waters. Reports indicate that this is not an isolated incident, as there have been multiple sightings of sharks in the Murcia region and surrounding areas in recent years, often due to low water depths.

In June twenty twenty-three, local emergency services had to instruct bathers to leave the water due to another shark sighting, which later left the area. Earlier in January twenty twenty-four, municipal teams removed a deceased shark weighing two hundred kilograms from El Rihuete beach in Puerto de Mazarrón, believed to be the same one spotted alive days prior off the coast of La Azohía in Cartagena.

In the summer of twenty twenty-three, a supposed blue shark caused swimmers in La Manga to quickly leave the water. Experts later clarified that the creature was likely a tuna that had escaped from the San Pedro fish farm.
