Guardamar del Segura in Alicante has implemented a ban on pyrotechnics during the Moros y Cristianos fiesta, aligning with new animal welfare legislation. The restriction was put in place for the Christian Entrance and Moorish Entrance parades, which took place on twenty-sixth and twenty-seventh of July respectively. Both parades started at eight in the evening, half an hour earlier than in previous years, to help prevent the events from running late into the night.

The local Department of Fiestas, led by María Venerdi, confirmed the prohibition of pyrotechnics in an official statement before the festivities. This decision stems from Law seven in twenty twenty-three, enacted on twenty-eighth of March, which aims to protect the rights and welfare of animals by reducing the harmful effects of loud noises that can cause anxiety and distress.

Animal welfare group Animalia Protección Animal has welcomed this decision, describing it as a brave step toward more respectful celebrations. The organisation has emphasised that excessive noise not only affects animals but also impacts individuals with autism and other neurodivergent conditions, which can be distressing during such communal events.

Local celebrations are now set to be more inclusive, with the welfare of both animals and individuals taken into consideration. This move reflects a growing trend of prioritising animal rights and wellbeing within festive traditions across Spain.
