The Ayuntamiento of Torrevieja has initiated the demolition of a derelict municipal building located at the intersection of Calle Maldonado and its namesake thoroughfare. This project is being carried out under a smaller works contract with a base budget of over forty thousand euros and is expected to be completed within two months. Domingo Paredes, the councillor for Heritage, has highlighted that the structure posed not only a public safety risk but also obstructed part of the road, creating significant issues for traffic flow and pedestrian access.

Paredes emphasised that this demolition is crucial for restoring safe passage and improving the urban environment. Acquired by the Ayuntamiento in December twenty twenty-four, the building was in an advanced state of decay, with risks of partial or total collapse, and its location hampered normal accessibility in the area. The demolition will realign the road, enhance accessibility, and remove a potential hazard for both vehicles and pedestrians.

Once the demolition is complete, the Parks and Gardens Department plans to transform the area into a plaza with green spaces, contributing to the improvement of the urban landscape and providing a new gathering and leisure space for the neighbourhood. Concha Sala, the councillor for Parks and Gardens, stated that the plan includes the addition of vegetation and children’s play equipment, responding to community needs for more recreational facilities.

This initiative, situated in a densely populated area near the busy Avenida Diego Ramírez Pastor, aims to create a family-friendly environment, enriching the locale for both children and families, and contributing to the overall wellbeing of the community.
