The City Council of Orihuela is set to communicate with the Ministry of the Interior regarding the urgent requirement for a permanent Guardia Civil presence along the coastal area. Mayor Pepe Vegara expressed that the Costa needs enhanced security resources. The local government plans to provide assistance, including land for constructing a new barracks to facilitate Guardia Civil operations in the area.

This decision emerged from a recent Local Security Board meeting, which included key figures from local law enforcement. Although crime statistics indicate a low level of criminal activity, the meeting revealed the increasing workload faced by local police, particularly during peak tourist seasons.

In addition to discussions on local security, the meeting addressed the rise in gender violence cases. The Local Security Board decided to strengthen measures for protecting victims in light of new guidance from the State Secretary of Security. A revised protocol will be developed to meet the evolving needs resulting from this troubling trend.

Furthermore, new responsibilities will be allocated between the Guardia Civil and Local Police to improve the management of these cases. The Guardia Civil will oversee high-risk gender violence cases, while the Local Police will handle lower-risk instances in collaboration with their counterparts. These actions aim to ensure victims receive the necessary support and protection.
