The local government of Torrevieja has approved the bidding for a comprehensive renovation of the Salt Industry Interpretation Centre, with a base budget of five hundred eleven thousand four hundred seventy-six euros, including VAT. The project is expected to take five months to complete and is supported by the Next Generation EU recovery plan, part of the Torrevieja Tourism Sustainability Plan from twenty twenty-one. The initiative is managed by the Ministry of Industry and Tourism, with the involvement of the Generalitat Valenciana and Turisme Comunitat Valenciana.

The contract for the renovation will be awarded through a negotiated procedure without publicity, after the previous simplified open process was unsuccessful. The design for the project has been created by Rocamora Diseño y Arquitectura, and it has been driven by the departments of Heritage and Tourism.

The site, previously a train halt on Avenida de la Estación, will be transformed into a museum dedicated to the local and global history and evolution of salt production. The museum is planned to feature an impressive entrance with large illuminated letters, an outdoor area with a historic wagon and explanatory panels about Torrevieja’s origins related to salt, divided exhibits on local salt history and urban development, as well as immersive scenery using large blocks of salt, audiovisual displays, and archaeological artefacts.

A number of construction companies, including Excavaciones GEOS and ACSA Obras e Infraestructuras, have been invited to submit bids via the Public Sector Contracting Platform. This new centre aims to combine historical, industrial, and tourism values, placing Torrevieja on the global map of salt production while providing a sensory and educational experience in a sustainably rehabilitated environment.
