The Town Hall of Torrevieja has announced a budget allocation of five hundred forty-three thousand four hundred forty-five euros, including VAT, intended to strengthen security and surveillance across municipal properties and events until the year twenty twenty-nine. This decision comes after recognising that the local police force currently lacks sufficient personnel to meet security demands. Annual spending is set at one hundred thirty-five thousand euros, covering over six thousand hours of service with a team of ten security personnel and agents.

The need for improved security arises as the current contract concludes this Sunday. The new tender process is underway; however, it won’t be granted this week. Local authorities expect increased police manpower, with potentially one hundred eighty officers ready to return from training sessions after achieving permanent positions. This situation marks a significant recovery in staffing levels for the local police, allowing them to undertake full security duties.

Municipal authorities argue that outsourcing security services is necessary due to the current police force being overstretched. The council aims to address the rising demand for oversight at municipal events and facilities as the town’s population continues to grow, currently exceeding one hundred eight thousand residents. Enhancing security presence is considered vital for public safety and effective traffic management.

In addition to covering security for weekly markets and municipal properties, this initiative will facilitate better crowd management and address some procedural delays citizens face in accessing municipal services. The contracted security personnel will work alongside local police for efficient incident management and cooperation with law enforcement agencies, ensuring comprehensive coverage of local security needs.
