Residents of Playa Babilonia, located in Guardamar del Segura, organised a symbolic swim on Tuesday evening to protest the imminent demolition of around sixty traditional houses. The protest, which had a festive and summer atmosphere, attracted numerous local residents and was promoted through social media channels. Participants called on the Ministry for Ecological Transition to reconsider the demolitions that are planned for September.

This act of solidarity brought together locals, including young activist David Renner, who has been vocal about the historical significance of these houses. The swim concluded with applause, as community members expressed their hope that their voices would prompt authorities to reconsider their plans, especially after witnessing similar demolitions earlier this summer.

The demolition plans aim to restore around six hundred metres of beach for public use, linking the coast with the surrounding dune system. However, residents argue that the erosion of the beach relates more to governmental neglect and improper infrastructure rather than the presence of their homes. Over the years, their requests for extensions have gone unanswered, and legal avenues have largely proved unfruitful.

Despite the challenging situation, the local residents’ association continues to seek legal protections for the properties that represent a significant aspect of local culture and architecture. They aim to push for the recognition of these homes as a Cultural Heritage Site, which could provide them with additional legal support against the demolitions. The situation remains precarious as community members strive to preserve their heritage against the backdrop of changing coastal regulations.
